Abstract
There are over 650 species of holothurians known from various parts of the world. In the seas around India, nearly 200 species of holothurians are known, of which about 75 are from the shallow waters within twenty meters depth. Of these, 13 species are of commercial value. The beche-de-mer industry in India has a bright future if it switches over to other grounds like Lakshadweep and the various islands of Andaman and Nicobar which have the best quality holothurians for beche-de-mer.
