    Abstract

The paper deals with the physico-chemical characteristics of water in the Pillaimadam Lagoon along the Palk Bay and their relationship with variations in the abundance of fish seed in the lagoon. Seven stations have been fixed covering the vast expanse of the lagoon and one at the bar mouth in the sea for collection of data at fortnightly intervals. Detailed observations have been made on variations in depth, direction of the movement of water in and out of the lagoon, atmospheric and surface water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH from October 1978 onwards. In addition, data on the rate of evaporation, seepage and the effect of tidal i hfluence on the depth of the water in the adjacent fish farm are also included.
