Abstract

The family Nemipteridae is represented by Nemipterus japonicus in the trawler catches off Mangalore. Locally known as "Rani fish" it forms one of the important offshore catches* constituting 26.4%. There is practically no information available regarding the biology and fishery of this group of fishes. It is therefore attempted in the present account, to deal with the feeding habits, sex ratio and maturity stages, size groups, and depth wise distribution of this species.
