Abstract

Plant functional traits serve as critical indicators of adaptation and ecosystem functionality, offering insights into species’ responses to environmental challenges such as climate change. This chapter explores the intricate interplay between plant morphology, physiology, and ecological processes, emphasizing their role in enhancing resilience and adaptation in varied ecosystems. A detailed analysis highlights the hydrological impacts of afforestation, adaptive management practices, and the application of hydrological models like Soil and Water Assessment Tool for assessing forest–water interactions. Furthermore, the chapter underscores the importance of nature-based solutions in mitigating desertification, enhancing biodiversity, and fostering ecosystem stability. The vulnerability and adaptability of forest species, particularly Rhododendron arboreum in the Himalayan region, are examined through sensitivity and adaptive capacity traits. Strategies such as reforestation, agroforestry, and climate-smart forestry are discussed for their potential to maintain ecosystem services, improve livelihoods, and mitigate climate change impacts. This synthesis provides a comprehensive framework for understanding plant functional traits and developing informed management practices to sustain ecosystems under dynamic environmental conditions.
