Abstract

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) are district level units of Indian council of agricultural research (ICAR) that are functioning with major objective of disseminating latest technologies among farmers towards agricultural development. The Ernakulam KVK of ICAR-Central marine fisheries research institute (CMFRI) has developed a strong bondage with farmers in the district through a slew of activities and a series of effective measures to keep the farming on right track. Ensuring local production of safe food by promoting farming in every homestead is the major focus of this KVK. We supply a wide variety of agro inputs including organic manures and seeds through KVK salescounter located at CMFRI, Kochi besides providing training and technology backstopping services. The satellite production centres of KVK established in public-private partnership with farmers produce quality planting materials, seeds and other agro inputs for supplying through sales counter while acting as source of livelihood for the partner farmers. The Farm shoppe of KVK Ernakulam functioning at CMFRI, Kochi is a model facility for marketing farmer’s produce directly to consumers. This arrangement enhances farmer’s income while ensuring safe food to consumers and is in line with Doubling farmer’s income programme of Government of India. This KVK has conducted two skill training programmes under the unique initiative Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) during this year. We also conducted various programmes for developing entrepreneurship among women and youth in the field of Agriculture and allied sectors.Dissemination of information has it’s own significance in reaching out the targeted audience timely. This edition of newsletter provides a view of various programmes undertaken by KVK Ernakulam with a view to invite fruitful future collaborations from peer institutions, line departments and research organizations and most importantly, the farmers to work together in the coming years for betterment of farming sector and ensuring safe food to all of us.
