Abstract

ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR -CMFRI) Kochi is a pioneering Marine Fisheries Research organization established by Government of India on February 3rd 1947 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and became an integral part of ICAR family in 1967. Since then the institute is revolutionizing in Marine fisheries resource assessment, Biodiversity assessment, Ecological and Environmental monitoring, Development of novel bioactive nutraceuticals, Fish nutrition and development of diagnostic tools and measures for fish diseases, Development of food and shell fish farming technologies through various Mariculture intervention and its extension to farmers field, Ornamental fish breeding and its culture, Live feed culture for hatchery operation for substantiating hatchery seed production of fishes. The technologies developed by the institute is being transferred to the end users through various training programmes, on farm demonstration programme, focused hands on training, and also creating awareness through Kisan melas, Exhibitions, Awareness camp, Field days, Scientist- Farmer interaction meet, Open-house Melas etc., through CMFRI Kochi as Head quarter along with its 11 centres, 15 field centres which are located all along the coastal states of India and also through its 2 KVK's.
