Wetland areas and three major, six medium and one minor river systems It is also the most productive marine habitat system of India. 1.15 lakh families depend on fishing for livelihood. About 0.93 lakh families (80%) traditional fishing and total fishing families 42% of the population live below the poverty line. Frequent cyclones and storms in the Bay of Bengal and Odisha coast and compulsory fishing bans for wildlife conservation disrupt the livelihood of fishermen. Hence, it is essential to develop alternative livelihood measures to enhance the socio-economic status of fishermen as well as to increase production from the marine habitat. ICAR-CMFRI has taken up work on feasibility of sea algae farming and standardization of culture techniques off Odisha coast under a project funded by Department of Fisheries and Animal Resources, Government of Odisha.
