    Abstract

Technology and modernization have undoubtedly revolutionized the fisheries sector due to the rising human population, urbanisation and changes in macroeconomics of the country. Trawling has acquired the status of an industry with incorporation of the technological advancements and there are certain parameters for increasing fishing power, particularly in trawling such as vessel size, engine power, net and gear design, fish finding technology, catch-handling procedures and chilling facilities. The study focused on trawl fisheries in, Munambam fishing harbour located in Vypin Island of Ernakulam district of Kerala. The study identified that the mechanised trawlers have expanded both in terms of numbers and in size, largely as a result of locally-driven technological innovation and adaptations. The multiday operating vessels, the fishing effort duration varied from single days to multiday (8 to 12 days). The ownership regime include individual and fishermen shareholders. The crew size varies from 8-15 labourers which included Srank, Engine driver, skippers and other labourers. Besides with labour wage, the fish labourers are typically paid a percentage of the boat’s overall catch, commonly referred to as a crew share which was found to be 40 per cent. Adoption of mechanisation and employing modern fishing methods enhanced the social and economic well-being of fisher communities. The study advocates the need for strict implementation of fisheries regulations to be strictly adhered for the longer sustainability of fishery resources. Even though development of technology is inevitable, fisheries management tools can be used to improve the balance between harvesting capacity and resource availability.
