Abstract
The marine fisheries sector provides food, livelihoods and economic benefits to millions of people, globally. Fish and seafood form a significant trade commodity for most of the countries with a large Exclusive Economic Zone, including India with an EEZ of 2.02 million square km. Globally, marine capture fisheries sector is facing challenges of declining catches that have arisen either due to the unsustainability of the fishing practices in place, the gradual habitat degradation due to anthropogenic activities or climate change related environmental phenomenon that disrupts the normal. This can cause significant economic loss at the individual, community and country levels and impact all stakeholders. Hence, ensuring sustainability of the sector is vital through appropriate fisheries policies and management interventions. Science-based fishery policies and innovative approaches at all levels of fishery management are hence required. With the above context, the current issue of MFIS includes some articles of interest.
