Abstract

According to FishBase about 34,800 species of fish had been described as of February 2022, which is more than the combined total of all other vertebrate species: mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. Of the fish species from the world, India supports of about 2923 marine fishes owing to 8.84% of the total marine fish resources. Of the overall fish diversity known from India, the marine fishes make up 62 percent, containing 1838 species and the freshwater species 1048 species contributing to 36 percent. Of the total marine fishes reported, 182 species are deepwater forms.
