Abstract

Highlighting the impact of climate change on marine fisheries, Dr. Grinson, Director of CMFRI, stressed the need for all stakeholders to brace for potential shifts in the community structure of marine resources. Recently, a transformation has been seen in the marine ecosystem. Many fish species, which were once abundant in certain coastal areas, are now scarce; instead, new resources are emerging. This offers both opportunities and challenges, he said. He also pointed out that these changes are a consequence of fluctuations in climate and weather patterns. Physical changes such as a rise in sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean currents will have a direct impact on planktons, which form the base of the marine food web. Consequent disruptions in primary productivity have a cascading effect on the marine ecosystem, George said. In the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and studying the impact of climate change in marine fisheries.
