Abstract

This study examines the prevalence and interactions of derelict fishing gear with marine life at two reef sites along Karnataka Coast in Laccadive Sea. SCUBA-assisted underwater surveys conducted between May 2019 and March 2021 documented derelict fishing gear predominantly originating from local commercial fishing activities. Variations in the abundance of derelict fishing gear across sampling sites were attributed to differences in commercial fishing pressure within the study area. A total of 115 interactions between marine taxa and derelict gear were recorded. The presence of derelict gears within reef ecosystems was found to significantly benefit algae, whereas scleractinian corals experienced substantial damage. For understanding the underlying causes of derelict gear formation, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 195 fishers, revealing socio-economic factors contributing to the issue. The study identified snagging as the primary cause of gear loss, with gillnets exhibiting the highest incidence. While older gear is often recycled, monofilament gillnets are frequently discarded due to their limited recyclability. This study underscores the ecological impacts of derelict fishing gear and the need for targeted management strategies to mitigate its effects on reef ecosystems.
