    Abstract

Indian pompano (Trachinotus mookalee) is a marine fish, considered to be one of the good candidate species for coastal aquaculture and suitable for species diversification. The fish is having important characters like ease of breeding in controlled condition, quick adaptability to different culture conditions, and better acceptance to artificial feed, pleasant appearance, good meat quality and high consumer preference. All these characters indicate the fish as one of the new candidate species for commercial aquaculture operations in the country. It is found to be suitable for farming in different culture systems including marine cages, coastal cages, coastal ponds and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) at variable densities. Among, different farming systems, the coastal pond farming practice can utilize, wet and saline soils and degraded and unutilized lands. Also, the unused the coastal ponds (shrimp) could be reused for new culture operation or in crop rotation with shrimp. Understanding the culture potential of the species, breeding and seed production technology for the species was standardized by ICAR-CMFRI, Visakhapatnam Regional Centre, and subsequently the pond culture technology was developed under the All India Network Project on Mariculture (AINP-Mariculture). The standardized culture method was demonstrated and disseminated in different places with financial support from National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad. The standardized package of practices for the coastal pond farming method for Indian pompano is given below. Various steps involved in the culture method are pond preparation, water treatment, nursery rearing, grow-out culture and harvesting.
