Abstract
Providing livelihood to millions of people, a source of nutritional security for millions of fish eaters, and arriving with a comparatively lower carbon foot-print trail, marine fisheries mean many things to various stakeholders. Today, India is the third largest fish producing (including inland sector) and second largest aquaculture producing nation in the world. Hence, fisheries development schemes and activities that aim at socio-economic upliftment and deliver benefits to the sector are of utmost importance. This includes sustainable fisheries management interventions and plans, hand holding for adoption of better technologies to sustain and enhance production and incomes through better value chains, higher productivity and less post-harvest losses. A sound research and technical support system to help the fishers and fish farmers reap the benefits of a large and bountiful marine ecosystem is essential. This issue of MFIS covers various aspects of marine capture fisheries and mariculture for the benefit of the readers.
