Abstract
Established in 1947, ICAR-CMFRI has made significant contributions to marine fisheries management, mariculture, marine ecosystems and marine biotechnology domains, in India. Artificial Reefs deployment to benefit small-scale fishers, whole genome sequencing of selected species, benefitted small scale fishers. Whole genome sequencing, development of nutraceuticals, hatchery technologies for 38 species including food fish, shellfish and ornamental fish, cage farming technology development are some of the recent significant achievements of the Institute which has bagged over 140 awards during the last decade. As the 17th Director of ICAR-CMFRI, the goal is to steer research that aligns institutional mandates with a global perspective. Developing AI-based marine resource identification systems, advancing the island fisheries of India, managing transboundary fish stocks, upgrading fish stock status assessments, enhancing mariculture production through genetic improvement and CRISPRCas technology, exploring in vitro meat of marine fishes as a promising future for sustainable seafood and successfully addressing the challenges of climate change through our research programmes require attention. With the talent pool available and the dedicated support of the entire ICAR-CMFRI family, and embodying the true spirit of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” let us move forward together to reach new heights.
