This small-sized flatfish is a marine, estuarine-dependent species, spawning at sea but with juveniles dependent on estuarine nursery areas. Its reported distribution range is from Walvis Bay, Namibia to Maputo Bay, Mozambique, but its estuarine distribution is largely restricted to the lower reaches of warm- and cool temperate estuaries in South Africa. It can be locally common, but no quantitative population trend data are available. However, its core nursery habitat extent in permanently open estuaries covers less than 70 km2; as such, its Area of Occupancy based on nursery habitat is potentially as small as 140 km2, but certainly less than 2,000 km2, meeting the threshold for a threatened listing under criterion B2. Moreover, this habitat is under significant threat from freshwater flow reduction, pollution, resource exploitation and habitat modification.
