Abstract

Seasonal variations in dissolved carbohydrate (DCHO) were studied in three tropical freshwater ponds for a period of one year. In Othakadai Pond the DCHO values varied from 0-3 to 200 mg/1, the range of variation in Teppakulam Tank was from 16 to 281 mg/1 and in Yanamalai Pond it fluctuated from 0.3 to 275 mg/1. Fluctuations in DCHO content was found to be related to chlorophyll a values only during a part of the annual cycle which indicates that probably plant organisms utilise the DCHO,
