Abstract
Mariculture is a specialized branch of aquaculture involving the cultivation of marine organisms for food and other products in an enclosed section of the sea (cages/pens), or in tanks, ponds or raceways which are filled with saline water. Generally the mariculture production data focuses on commercial data, which is the output of marine and brackish farming activities for profit whose final harvest is used for human consumption. It is a promising sector by which the additional marine fish requirement can be met in the future years. It is also the fastest growing sub-sector of aquaculture. At global level, mariculture produces many high value finfish, crustaceans, and molluscs viz. oysters, mussels, clams, cockles and scallops.
