    Abstract

The Consultation was aimed at producing a set of identification sheets for commercial marine organisms from the Western Indian Ocean based on the examination of fresh and preserved material and on the exchange of information and experience among experts present at the meeting. As a result of nearly 4 weeks of work in Cochin, 793 draft identification sheets and 160 drawings were prepared and over 120 species photographed in colour. The material will be completed by correspondence at FAO HQ and published as a loose-leaf set of sheets following the format of previous publications in this series. Recommendations made by participants included proposals for: (a) the setting up of catalogued reference collection in the area; (b) completion as well as periodical updating of the material produced in Cochin with the help of a network of ichthyologists and field workers familiar with the area and (c) funding and execution of similar projects in other world areas for which identification sheets are required.
