Abstract
Santhappan Jones was born on 27thAugust 1910at Kovalam in Kerala. He is thefifth and last child in tbe family. He had his early education at Venganoor near Kovalam and at Trivandrum. Soon after graduating with distinction from the Maharaja's College of Science (now University College), Trivandrum in 1933, he started his research as a honorary research scholar in the same college for a year. Later, the award of a university scholarship enabled him to proceed to the Zoology Laboratory of the Madras University for further studies and he received the M.Sc, degree in 1937 for his investigations on the breeding and development of brackishwater fishes. From then on, this line of work has been dearest to his heart. His ability and enthusiasm for studies on fishes captured the attentionof Dr. Baini Prashad. Dr. Sunder Lal Horaand Dr. B. Sundara Rai, theqiants in the field in those days.
