Abstract
Mass mortality of a variety of fishes due to the blooin of blue green alga Trichodesmium thiebauttii Gomont was ohserved on tbe surface waters close to the shore of Mandapam area in the Gulf of Mannar on the 13th of June 1977. The bloom extended for a period of eight days from 7'th to 14th June 1977. The oxygen levels of the sea water was found to be low in tbe bloom period. Enormous quantity of dead fishes were washed ashore during the peak of the bloom.
