    Abstract

    Data on age and growth, feeding habits and spawning of L. lactarius based on material collected from trawl catches off Mangalore are presented , Based on length frequency studies, the life span of the species has been fixed as 3 y r , attaining a size of 150 mm TL (total length) at the end of 1st yr, and 270 mm 2nd yr, Fish in the 3rd yr of life are few in the commercial catches, the fishery being mainly based On 0 and I - yr old fish. Males are fished more than females, Larger fish appear to be available in deeper waters.
