Abstract
With a view to study .the larval and post-larval stages of the common pshes occurring along the Madras Coast, regular plankton collections were . made from the Sea and from the backwaters of the Cooum and Adyar throughout the period of study. These collections contained post-larval forms of fourteen Genera belonging to thirteen Families and a general account of the characters of the post-Iarvre is given in this paper with special reference to pigmentation which is one of the important diagnostic features of the larvre of fishes .
