Abstract
A review of the literature on the biology and fishery of ribbon-fishes of the family Trichiuridae from the Indian waters shows that, except for a few earlier papers on this subject, no attempt has been made towards a comprehensive study of this group, which constitutes one of the important commercial fisheries of India. Consequently, at the instance of Dr. S. Jones, Director, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mandapam Camp, it was decided to make detailed observations in this direction and the work was initiated in December 1958 at the institute. The present work entitled "Studies on the biology and fishery of ribbon-fishes of the family Trichiuridae !rom Indian waters" includes my observations on the material collected during the period March 1959 to February 1961. All the data have been analysed and interpreted by me.
