Abstract
The marine fisheries R&D is receiving increased attention at the National as well as International levels in view of the 1) declining yields of the exploited stocks, necessitating measures to sustain their yields, 2) underexploitation of deep-sea and oceanic resources, warranting the development of strategies for their effective and sustained exploitation, 3) need to combat protein-malnutrition of the rapidly increasing human population, demanding the development and upgradation of mariculture technologies and utilisation of regions and species suitable for culture, and step up the production, and 4) the lack of trained manpower for research and operatives, necessitating increased thrust to Human Resources Development in these areas. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has the mandate to address these issues and has been constantly contributing to the long-term and sliort-term needs of the industry and the Government through its Research, Education, Extension and Consultancy programmes.
