Abstract
Before 1947, fisheries research and development in India were the main responsibilities of the then provinces and states. Except for the "Indian Fisheries Act" promulgated in 1897, the Government of India had no direct interest in fisheriefi. However, studies on fishes and other aquatic fauna were being carried out by the Marine Survey of India, and the Zoological Survey of India, in addition to the Fisheries Departments and Universities of some of the maritime provinces.
