    Abstract

This training manual equips the reader with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to study marine biodiversity and environment. It is based on the notes provided by the scientists of ICAR-CMFRI on the series of lectures delivered during the training programme “Know Your Marine Biodiversity and Environment (MarBiE 1) held from 5th to 9th February 2024 for researchers and postgraduate students at ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi. and it provides a comprehensive overview of key topics. The training manual examines the vast taxonomic spectrum of marine life, encompassing marine microbes, plankton, invertebrates (sponges, jellyfish, soft corals, anemones, corals, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms), vertebrates (cartilaginous and bony fishes, sea turtles, marine mammals), marine flora (seaweeds, seagrasses and mangroves) and specialised groups (coral reef fishes). A detailed understanding of the ecological roles they play within marine ecosystems is gained from the chapters.
