Abstract
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated the total marine wild fish catch in the world at 79.3 million t in 2016, of which, nearly 35% entered the international trade either for food or non-food (fish oil, fish meal etc) uses. All fishery resources are dynamic and have an underlying spatial component, reflected in their distribution and abundance patterns in the marine ecosystem. The spatial analysis approach enables fish biomass to be disaggregated by region or lifehistory stages and incorporating this information in fish stock assessment models allows better management actions to regulate fishing mortality and design appropriate conservation activities. In India, area specific fishery management plans are mooted under the newly proposed National Marine Fisheries Policy (NMFP, 2017). ICAR-CMFRI which has been estimating the maritime state based fish catch and effort trends since 1950 has moved to a data collection and reporting system using electronic tablets which enabled spatial data reporting with passive geo-referencing since 2018. How effectively this spatial information can be tapped to surpass the existing fish stock assessment models will have to be evaluated with case studies in the Indian marine fisheries sector. Regarding boosting of marine fish production through mariculture, the emphasis is on good husbandry practices during the broodstock development and the larval rearing phase with protocols developed for each species of interest. Hence, research communications on various aspects of marine capture fisheries and mariculture are presented in this issue of MFIS.
