Abstract
Adherence to healthy fishing practices, responsible fisheries management templates and a responsive fisheries governance hold the key to a vibrant and sustainable marine fisheries sector in India. Stakeholders across the spectrum, from fishermen to administrators play a crucial role to enable the country tap its rich marine fisheries sector in a sustainable and economically befitting manner. Against this background the southern fisheries' ministers conference was organized recently with official representatives from several maritime states of India. The institute actively supported this venture and contributed scientific inputs at this forum. Inauguration of the National broodstock facility for pompano and the scaled up hatchery facilities for mussels at the Vizhinjam Research Centre of the institute are expected to further boost the linkages between research and mariculture activities. The institute has played a pioneering role in developing mariculture sector in the country. This has enabled its active participation in the preparation of the draft of a National Mariculture Policy, which was presented before stakeholders for feedback, in the various maritime states of India. It is expected that based on this activity, the eagerly awaited robust policy framework for mariculture sector in India would soon be in place.
