Abstract
The recent launch of two programmes aimed at realising the immense potential of the fisheries sector, namely, the network project on breeding of ornamental fishes and the multivendor ecommerce website is notable. The anticipated outcomes are increased employment opportunities and allied economic benefits through ornamental fish breeding and the development of value-chain in marine fish sales, respectively. In tune with the goal of ensuring sustainability of Indian marine fisheries sector, the MSC certification process is progressing well and it is expected that some of the commercially important crustacean and molluscan fishery resources in India will complete the certification process soon. For the first time, open sea cage culture of orange spotted grouper has been successfully demonstrated off Visakhapatnam and become an iconic event in the history of Indian mariculture. Farmers trained in mariculture activities at the various centres of the institute are also becoming successful entrepreneurs and getting recognition for their efforts. These developments are a motivation for the institute to further focus on means to increase income and livelihood options in the marine fisheries sector. Notably, the institute was also selected for the Rajarshi Tandon award for excellent official language implementation activities among the ICAR institutes. My best wishes to all to attain further heights of success and bring glory to our institute.
