Abstract
Expanding production methods of marine finfish and shellfish is critical to the advancement of food, bait, and ornamental aquaculture industries. Currently, only a limited number of marine fish species are being cultured and with variable success. The major impediment to commercial production of currently grown species and success with new candidate species is the utilization of an appropriate live feed during the first feeding phase of the larval cycle. This period is extremely crucial for the optimal development of marine fish larvae. A live feed with the proper nutritional composition, constituting a suitable size range, and stimulating a feeding response is necessary to expand the number of species of marine finfish and shellfish produced. In this training manual, various live feeds used in feeding finfish / shellfish larvae are discussed in detail with their culture methodologies. Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR - Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has a long history of expertise in isolation and culture of live feed for use in aquaculture / mariculture. The centre has been providing stock cultures of marine microalgae to all shrimp hatcheries along the east coast of India. The centre receives umpteen numbers of requests for training on live feed production. It was therefore, felt a necessity to develop a trained manpower in the industry for carrying forward this technology, which is vital for the success of any finfish / shellfish hatchery. This training manual will serve as a ready reckoner for technicians in the hatchery for maintaining and multiplying quality live feed for use in larviculture.
