Abstract
A two-day national workshop cum training on Digital Library Management got underway at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on Friday with a call to utilise the prospects of information technology to revolutionize the library system. The workshop, which is being organized by the Library and Documentation Centre at CMFRI, highlighted that special trainings are required to develop skills to set up and manage digital libraries. Inaugurating the workshop, Dr A Ramachandran, vice chancellor of KUFOS said the library professionals must be well trained with the latest information management technologies in order to extend the efficacy of the digital library system to the users. The development in information technology has revolutionized the concept of library system, he said adding that digitization of information has made the research activities easier and effective. Dr Ramachandran also inaugurated D-Space@cmfri, a digital archive of information related to the institute. In his presidential address, CMFRI Director Dr A Gopalakrishnan said the CMFRI library would be made the information gateway in the field of fisheries and marine science in the country. The workshop is intended to bring together library and information professionals in a platform for in depth analysis and discussion on various aspects and new developments in the field of digital library system, he added. Dr Gopalakrishnan released a special publication 'Glimpses of Marine Fisheries- A Caricature', authored by the Ret. Principal Scientist of CMFRI Dr A A Jayaprakash.
