Abstract
This dissertation is mainly centered around the aspects of phytoplankton pigments and primary productivity in relation to the environmental characteristics to the Ernakulam channel close to the barmouth of Cochin backwater system during South-west monsoon season. The phytoplankters, being the primary producers in the food-chain and food-web of marine and estuarine ecosystems, are of considerable importance in the larval recruitment of major fisheries of estuarine and coastal waters. The phytoplankton serves as primary food resource in the earlier stages of the life cycle of marine and estuarine organisms during their planktonic phase of life.
